Cairns Conference
Quniquennial Conference of BWUSWP May 2009
The quinquennial Baptist Women's Union of the South West Pacific Conference will be in Cairns, Queensland from Friday 1 to Monday 4 May 2009, beginning with welcome celebrations on the Friday evening and concluding with lunch on the Monday.

We would like as many women as possible to be there – all ages! We are hoping to have a number of women from West Papua at the Conference this time, for whom we are planning a translator. There are direct flights from Papua to Cairns at the moment, so please pray that these will still be in place in 2009. Nothing is more stirring to our faith than to meet sisters from countries where Christianity is not the primary religion.

It will also be a special time of meeting our Baptist sisters from every state and territory in Australia, from New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Papua Indonesia and elsewhere in the pacific.

A very interesting program has been outlined that includes a visit and dinner at the the Tjapukai Aboriginal Culture Park on the Saturday night (www.tjapukai.com.au) This includes the story of the past in sound and light, music, dance, firesticks and local food.

Cairns is situated in the Northern end of Tropical Queensland. It's a modern city and a great location from which to explore some of Australia's vast array of flora and fauna. Positioned to take advantage of the Great Barrier Reef and rainforest areas of the far north, it is perfect for that once-in-a-life time holiday.

Publicity flyers for SWP Conference 2009
Flyers have been prepared and are now available in two sizes. One is the standard A4 size and good for notice boards. The other is a 1/2 A4 (A5) size which is a good handout size.

Please download and print as many as are needed to distribute amongst the women in your church. This is a wonderful opportunity for women to meet and fellowship in a cross-cultural environment.

Cairns is also a beautiful place for a holiday. The Conference is over a long weekend, plan a few extra days and explore this beautiful part of God's creation.

    World AIDS Day
I send greetings from the BWA Women's Department.

This is to let you know that World AIDS Day is December 1, 2006. I have been invited to Stop AIDS - Keep the Promise meeting on December 1. The emphasis of the meeting will be on the role of faith-based communities in stopping violence against women and fighting AIDS. The meeting will take place here in Washington, D.C.

I just received an email from David Haroz, who is the policy officer UNAIDS-USA, about AIDS Global Epidemic. The document has some very important information that I wanted to share with you. Please share this with your women and ask them to use this as a prayer guide on December 1, World AIDS Day.

    Executive Director, BWA Women's Department

Day of Prayer money put to use
The Baptist Women s Fellowship of Papua (Indonesia) have opened a bank account and banked their gift from the Baptist World Day of Prayer ($2000) and a $200 love gift from the South Pacific meetings in Fiji earlier this year.

Elke is the wife of a helicopter pilot. She and her husband are living in the Global interaction (formerly ABMS) house as there are currently no GIA personnel in Papua. She is German and is doing a wonderful job of translating and being our communication person in Papua for the Baptist Women s Fellowship of Papua (BWFP).

    Elke writes:
Thank you very much for sending the money. The ladies came here to report that it has arrived safely. They are very happy about it and want to thank you and all the ladies who donated it very much!

Right away we went to the bank together (three of the ladies plus a husband of one of them) and I helped them fill in a withdrawal form. It was so cute! Ibu Lena in the queue and the others watching from the side. They found out that they had received Rp. 14.250.000 from you. This is a huge help to equip and redecorate the house which they have bought and want to use as an office and meeting place for the BWFP. The house needs a lot of help so your gift is very much appreciated.

They took out some of the money to start working and I took them to a store to buy some basic office supplies. The first thing was a folder and a hole puncher to keep the receipts. Then I gave them a little example for the bookkeeping. Since the two ladies who are in charge of the finances live a five hour drive away from the bank it is vital that whoever does the shopping etc keeps all the records in order so they can see what the status is when they come out and for the people in town to be able to ask them to come to town in time to get more money from the bank. A little complicated but I think it is a good start and I hope and pray that things will get easier for them and for the communication with you as well. It will be exciting to watch things happening!

Thank you very much again for your help and for this wonderful gift!

    Elke for the BWFP
